Nacida en Alcazarquivir (Marruecos, 1942), es Catedrática de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) desde 1983.

Born in Alcazarquivir (Morocco, 1942), she has been Lecturer in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) since 1983.

Es Ingeniero Agrónomo por la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (1964) y Doctor Ingeniero Agrónomo por la misma Universidad. Su director de tesis fue el Prof. D. Juan Santa María Ledochowski, reconocido especialista en levaduras, y su consejero en la Universidad
de Minnesota (EE.UU.), donde disfrutó de una beca de la Fundación Juan March, fue el Prof. James Jezeski, especialista en Microbiología Industrial.

She is an Agronomy Engineering graduate from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (1964) and did her doctorate in Agronomy Engineering at the same university. Her thesis was tutored by Professor Juan Santa María Ledochowski, a renowned specialist in yeasts. Her advisor at the University of Minnesota, where she studied with a grant from the Juan March Foundation, was Professor James Jezeski, a specialist in Industrial Microbiology.

Ha sido Investigadora en el College of Agriculture, University of Minnesota (EE.UU.); Ingeniero del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agronómicas (INIA); Vicepresidenta de la Sociedad Española de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular (SEBBM); Miembro de la European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) y de su Comisión de Admisiones; Miembro de la Comisión de Biología y Medicina del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC); Miembro del Consejo Científico del Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA); Directora del Departamento de Biotecnología de la UPM; Fundadora y primera Directora del Departamento de Genética Molecular de Plantas del Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CNB-CSIC); Directora del Programa de Doctorado conjunto UPM-Universidad de Chile en Biotecnología Agraria y Forestal con las Facultades de Ciencias Agronómicas y
Forestales de dicha Universidad ; Profesora del Centro Internacional de Altos Estudios Agronómicos Mediterráneos (CIHEAM-Zaragoza); Conferenciante invitada en numerosos foros nacionales e internacionales de su especialidad. Ha contribuido al establecimiento del "Instituto de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología" de Sancti Spiritus (Cuba) consistente en la formación de personal y en la colaboración en el desarrollo de las líneas de trabajo. Ha recibido el Premio de Investigación de la Fundación General de la UPM, la medalla de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y el Premio AMAVI a las Ciencias.

She has been a researcher at the College of Agriculture, University of Minnesota (USA); an engineer at the National Institute of Agronomy Research ("Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agronómicas - INIA"); vice-chairwoman of the Spanish Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Society ("Sociedad Española de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular - SEBBM"); member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and of the Admissions Committee; member of the Biology and Medicine Commission of the Superior
Board for Scientific Research ("Comisión de Biología y Medicina del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - CSIC"); member of the Valencia Institute for Agrarian Research ("Consejo Científico del Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias - IVIA"); head of the Biotechnology department at the UPM; founder and the first director of the Molecular Genetics of Plants department at the National Biotechnology Centre ("Centro Nacional de Biotecnología - CNB-CSIC"); director of the Doctorate in Agrarian and Forestry Biotechnology Programme, which the UPM runs jointly with the University of Chile, with the Agronomy and Forestry Science Faculties of this university, teacher at the International Centre for Higher Mediterranean Agronomy Studies ("Centro Internacional de Altos Estudios Agronómicos Meditarráneos - (CIHEAM- Zaragoza)"); invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences on her speciality.

She has contributed to the establishment of the Genetics and Biotechnology Engineering Institute ("Instituto de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología") of Sancti Spiritus (Cuba), which is dedicated to the training of the personnel and to the development of lines of work.
She has been awarded with UPM's General Foundation's Research Prize, the Universidad
Politécnica de Madrid medal and the Science AMAVI Prize.

Sus líneas de investigación han versado sobre ingeniería genética, genómica y biotecnología vegetal, especialmente en relación con la aplicación de métodos moleculares a la obtención de resistencia de las plantas a plagas de insectos y enfermedades bacterianas y fúngicas, junto con la dilucidación de los mecanismos de regulación génica durante el desarrollo y la germinación de las semillas.

Ha publicado cerca de un centenar de trabajos de investigación que acumulan más de 1.800 citas y ha dirigido una veintena de tesis doctorales.

The lines of her research have investigated genetic engineering, genomics and vegetable
biotechnology, especially in relation to the molecular methods of obtaining plant resistance
to insect plagues and to bacterial and fungal diseases; and also to clarifying the mechanisms of gene regulation during the development and germination of seeds. She has published almost one hundred research works which accumulate more than 1,800 quotes. She has also tutored over 20 doctoral theses. Her contributions can be classified into three major subjects.
