Ingeniero Industrial (1971) en la ETSI Industriales de Barcelona, UPC y Doctor Ingeniero Industrial, premio extraordinario (1976) en la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña.

Es catedrático de Lenguajes y Sistemas Informáticos de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña. Es responsable del grupo de investigación en Modelado, Visualización e Informática Gráfica de su Universidad, y ha sido Vicerrector de Investigación de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña entre 1988 y 1992.

Empezó a trabajar en el campo dela informática en 1967, e inició su actividad investigadora dentro de la informática gráfica en el año 1979 tras diversos trabajos en el área de la automática y de tratamiento de la señal. Su grupo fue pionero en el desarrollo de la investigación en informática gráfica en España, que más adelante continuó con el nacimiento y consolidación de numerosos grupos de investigación.

Sus intereses de investigación incluyen el diseño geométrico asistido por ordenador, el modelado de sólidos, las representaciones geométricas jerárquicas y la realidad virtual. Su grupo trabaja activamente en distintos proyectos y actividades de investigación en realidad virtual y modelado de sistemas muy complejos en diversos campos como el geo-modelado, el diseño industrial, la simulación de la herencia cultural o el modelado y visualización de volumen en aplicaciones en el campo de la medicina.

Promovió la creación del Centro de Realidad Virtual de Barcelona y actualmente es el responsable del Centro por parte de la UPC. Ha investigado aspectos fundamentales y aplicados de la generación y gestión de modelos geométricos multirresolución, de la navegación en tiempo real por entornos virtuales de complejidad muy elevada y de los sistemas de interacción implícita en sistemas de realidad virtual. Ha contribuido al desarrollo de nuevas técnicas de modelado basadas en representaciones geométricas discretas.

Ha publicado numerosos artículos en revistas internacionales de prestigio y ha participado activamente y por invitación en un buen número de congresos internacionales.

Es (o ha sido) miembro del Comité Editorial de revistas internacionales como Computer-Aided Design, Computer-Aided Geometric Design, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics y Computer & Graphics.

Ha tenido un papel destacado en organizaciones científicas internacionales como Eurographics y Siggraph. Ha sido Chairman de la Eurographics Association durante los años 2001 y 2002.

Ha estado involucrado y ha tenido diversas responsabilidades de evaluación de la investigación y proyectos a nivel autonómico, estatal e internacional. Ha sido asesor científico de Universidades, Asociaciones Internacionales y Agencias de Financiación de la Investigación. Ha sido miembro de diversos jurados para la concesión de premios de investigación a nivel nacional e internacional.

Ha sido galardonado con la medalla de plata de la Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya, con la medalla Narcís Monturiol de la Generalitat de Catalunya y con el XI Premio de la Fundación Catalana para la investigación en el año 2001. Fue nombrado Fellow de la asociación Eurographics.

Es académico correspondiente de la Academia de Ingeniería de Portugal.

Industrial Engineer (1971) from the Barcelona School of Engineers (UPC) and Doctor in Industrial Engineering (1976) from the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC) with a special outstanding recognition.

He is a Full Professor in Computer Science at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona. He is actively working in Computer Science since 1967. He is the head of the UPC Research Group in Modeling, Visualization and Computer Graphics, and he was Vice President for Research at the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya between 1988 and 1992.

He started his research work in Computer Graphics in 1979, and his group was a pioneer on the Computer Graphics research in Spain, leading afterwards to the creation of many other research groups in the country.

His research interests include geometric computer-assisted design, hierarchical geometric representations and virtual reality. His group works on different research projects and activities involving Virtual Reality and very complex models in a wide variety of fields such as geo-modeling, industrial design, cultural heritage, or the modeling and volume visualization in applications connected with medicine and health. The group keeps a strong international cooperation level and is active in Industry-based research.

He promoted the creation of the Virtual Reality Center in Barcelona, of which he is currently the scientific head, representing UPC. He has carried out research on fundamental and applied aspects of the generation and management of multi-resolution geometric models, on real-time navigation through highly complex virtual environments and on the implicit interaction in Virtual reality systems. He has contributed to the development of new modeling techniques based on discrete digital representations.

He has published many papers in reputed International Journals, and he has actively participated in, or has been invited to, a great number of International Conferences.

He is (or has been) a member of the Editorial Board of International Journals like Computer-Aided Design, Computer-Aided Geometric Design, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics and Computers & Graphics.

He has been active in International Scientific Organizations like Eurographics, IFIP and Siggraph. He was the Chairman of the Eurographics Association between 2001 and 2002.

He has been involved in evaluation tasks at the regional, national and international level. He was the Chairman of the Maths and CS TMR Netowrks panel of the European Union. He has been a scientific consultant of Universities, International Associations and Research Funding Agencies.

He has been honored with the silver medal from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and with the Narcís Monturiol medal from the Catalonia Government.  He received the XI Catalan Foundation Prize for research in 2001. He has been awarded as a Fellow of the Eurographics Association.

He is a corresponding member of the Academy of Engineering of Portugal.
